Salvatore Schilirò, in art SCHILI, was born in Rome. He is graduated in architecture, he has been a teacher of drawing and history of art for many years in secondary school in Italy. He lives and works in Rome.

The great interest for nature, ecology, environmental problems, the charming influence received from frequent naturalistic trips (Uganda, Congo, Cameroon, Zambia, Tanzania, Borneo, Brasil etc) have brought Schili to develop variegated iconographic microcosms.

From a horizon formed by fantastic, primitive totems, idols, tribal masks, influenced by the art of Congo and Mali, Schili has come to describe with greater passion a world inhabited by wild animals, representing them with a naturalistic eye as well as introducing symbolic and idealized elements. In fact, the reflection on the objective condition of fragility in which many animal species are exposed, leads Schili to give a solemn and sacral hieratic representation (animals emerge from a polychrome, almost pseudo-Byzantine background) to remind humanity 'responsibility for this unique wildlife heritage preservation'.

In Schili's paintings, animals look at us with a sad, fearful and resigned look and they convey to us "nostalgia" for a past condition of total freedom. They are conscious of centuries of hunting and poaching. Behind that look there is a whole history of forced migration and constraint in African nature reserves.

Africa, with its degraded urban reality and its natural resources plundered by secular exploitation, still retains, but who knows for how much, an immense and unique wildlife and natural heritage.

Salvatore Schiliro', in arte SCHILI, nato a Roma, laureato in architettura, ha insegnato per molti anni disegno e storia dell'arte in vari licei romani. Vive e lavora  a Roma.
